Saw a (very) old Horizon concerning, if I remember correctly, the Colorado and how it been so "efficiently" dammed for irrigation at various points upstream it now no longer reaches the sea - and one of the dams screwed up the bit running through Mexico, so they had to build a second dam further downstream to hold even more water back for them.
Seem to recall seeing something similar about the Danube, too.
